Colorful Leaves, Full Day

You’ll create your own leaf design the easy way- with fused fabrics. Learn a quick pattern transfer method and the basic principles of designing artwork (like repetition, variety, and contrast). Your kit includes all the fabric colors and values needed to make 4 small leaves for this design tutorial as well as a sampler of embroidery thread for stitching detail, texture, and pattern on the surface. (No sewing machine needed.) Beginner level. Materials List: $25 kit fee payable to instructor; kit includes hand-outs, hand-dyed fabrics and threads and a needle. Participants should bring: 2 yards of regular weight WonderUnder (paper backed, #805). Please DO NOT BRING HEAT ‘N BOND or STEAM A SEAM. Small sharp scissors like 5” knife blade scissors. Paper scissors. Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat. Specialty rotary cutter blades, such as Pinking, Wavy or Scallop (optional). Black Sharpie Fine Point or Ultra Fine Point marker or #2 lead pencil. Batting, 1 piece measuring about 20” x 20”. Quilt backing fabric, 1 piece measuring about 20” x 20”. Teflon sheet (Optional). Thimble (optional). Tweezers (optional). Small plastic bag for fabric scraps.

Tiny Homes, Full Day

Create a little house quilt and receive a degree in Architecture from the Chicago School of Fusing at the same time! In this workshop we explore the many techniques of fusing: free cutting, layering, collage building, improvisational design, and more. The result is a whimsical neighborhood placed in a colorful landscape setting and made from beautifully hand-dyed fabrics. (No sewing machine is needed.) Beginner level. Materials: $20 kit fee payable to instructor; kit includes hand-outs, hand-dyed fabric and thread and a needle. Participants should bring: 2 yards of regular weight WonderUnder (paper backed, #805). Please DO NOT BRING HEAT ‘N BOND or STEAM A SEAM. Small sharp scissors - small, 5” knife blade scissors work well. Paper scissors. Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat. Specialty rotary cutter blades, such as Pinking, Wavy or Scallop (optional). Batting (Hobbs Cotton Heirloom Batting recommended), 1 piece measuring about 18” x 18”. Garden of Eden, Half Day

In this tempting class create a small art quilt teeming with every flower in creation. Build a blooming garden on a green base of lush leaves, curly ferns and wavy blades of grass. Add simple daisies, jolly tulips and colorful chrysanthemums to the mix and you have a garden that Eve would envy. Directions for free cutting flowers and leaves from a pre-fused fabric kit and finishing techniques are covered. (No sewing machine needed.) $25 Kit Fee. Beginner level. Materials List: Small sharp scissors like 5” knife blade scissors. Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat. Specialty rotary cutter blades like Pinking, Wavy, or Scallop (optional). Cotton batting, 1 piece measuring about 14” x 14”. Quilt backing fabric, 1 piece measuring about 14” x 14”. Tweezers (optional). Small plastic bag for fabric scraps. $25 Kit Fee payable to instructor. Kit includes hand out, pre-fused hand-dyed fabrics, embroidery threads, and a needle.

LECTURE

Art Quilts: The Musical, Lecture & Lunch, 2 hours

Join Laura in celebrating the life of a quilt artist. Listen to her adventures in quilt making, see her art work, and hear traditional art quilt folk songs like “Everybody Gets Rejected Sometime” and the “Minnesota Quilter’s Polka”. It’s a quirky documentary featuring a display of her small art quilts and many other songs from the “Chicago School of Fusing Bond Fire Songbook”. Laura’s presentation includes lunch - Chicken Caesar Salad with crisp Romaine, grilled chicken, freshly grated Parmesan and croutons served with creamy cumin Caesar dressing; freshly baked rolls with butter; chocolate mousse cup plus coffee, hot or iced tea. (A vegetarian option is available with advance notice; please notify us at the time of your registration.)
