Jo Diggs has always cut, stitched and loved fabric. She is best known for landscapes of great depth and distance that express feelings of quiet and serenity. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally; her wool quilt “Snowscape” is in the collection of the National Quilt Museum (USA). A trained art teacher, Jo is dedicated to helping other stitchers achieve success and pleasure in their own work.

Miniature Landscapes, Full Day

Liberate your creativity using multiple layers of fabric to create landscapes with depth, distance, light effects, reflections and glowing color. The method is easy and can be used to create small “quickie” landscapes or expanded to make full-sized quilts. The cutting and layering is done without patterns, exploring direct cutting and designing ... just the quilter and his/her fabric! All levels. Materials List: Sharp fabric scissors with long, pointed blades. Rotary cutter if you have problems cutting with scissors. Thread to match fabric (silk is fine). Slender needles for appliqué work, 11 Sharps. Straight pins, long and fine. Thimble. Cotton fabric is best; unwashed is good for hand applique. Bring a wide range of closely graded colors - light to dark in any color you bring a lot of. Important - a bit of complementary color to enhance the color(s) you bring a lot of. Fabric can be all prints or solids or a combination. A good collection of smallish pieces is better than a few big pieces. Narrow stripes of low contrast are great. Also, fabrics with “glow” spots or areas where there is a “quick” light to dark transition. Hand dyes are fine, textured ones or sequential shadings from light to dark or one color to another. Muslin: very important to have as foundation for all fabric projects; minimum of a fat quarter. Sewing machine optional.

Designer Fish or Layered Landscapes, Full Day

Jo’s method of multi-layered appliqué works well to produce landscapes or underwater scenes of swaying kelp and brilliant fish. Both subjects will be demonstrated; students choose which to do. Emphasis on how to achieve visual richness through colorful combinations of free-hand cut, basic shapes. (No patterns offered.) Hand stitching demonstrated, but layering method can be used with fusing and machine stitching. Fish work especially well with machine embellishment. All levels. Materials List: Sharp fabric scissors with long, pointed blades. Rotary cutter if you have problems cutting with scissors. Thread to match fabric (silk is fine). Slender needles for appliqué work, 11 Sharps. Straight pins, long and fine. For landscape: bring materials described in “Miniature Landscapes” above (#006). For fish: fish fabrics - speckled, spotted, striped, the sky’s the limit. You may bring hard to handle fabrics like silk or synthetic knits. (Good to have lightweight, iron-on stiffening to stabilize these fabrics.) You will not need very large pieces. Background/water fabrics: darkish solids or prints. Suggestions: wavy stripes, polka dots, fabrics where you can feel “glow” as if light is filtering into the water. Water plants, kelp fabrics: in color something between the fish and the background, something the fish would like to swim through. Or, just bring fabrics you love together - wild or subtle and add an “ugly” or two, or a fabric you think you’ll never use. Sewing machine is optional - if you enjoy using surface stitchery, fish are a great subject. Teacher will demonstrate hand stitching, but is happy to have students do machine work. Sewing machine optional.

Landscapes and Beyond, Full Day

Explore landscape enhancement, re-structuring, repeated and morphing to make your basic landscape richer and more interesting. Paper exercises lead to expanded layouts with multiple views and shifting focus. From simple to segmented, that’s the progression. Jo’s landscape assembly method will be demonstrated if students have not taken a beginner class. All levels. Materials List: Bring at least 5 color copies each of two or more landscapes. Also bring black and white copies of the same landscapes, having both light and dark versions in the black and white photos. The landscape images can come from magazine photos, personal photos, fabric landscapes (stitched or fused) ... any source. These copies of landscape images will be cut apart, reworked and reassembled. Jo will provide some printed-on-paper landscapes of her work that students may cut and paste. Working supplies (not all may be used): clear tape, glue stick, 2-sided tape. Scissors and/or rotary cutter, paper and fabric blades, cutting mat. Tracing paper or clear plastic for copying, black marker. Colored pencils, pens and markers as desired. Ruler which is gridded and see-through. Two-sided fusing (such as WonderUnder). Optional: spray basting, reducing-glass and digital camera or cell phone camera. Very optional: fabric and tools as in Miniature Landscape class (#006) - very rarely used. Sewing machine if planning to move onto fabric. Sewing machine optional.

Having Fun in the Visual World, 1-1/2 hours

This slide lecture is based on the premise that not only are we what we eat, we are also what we see. The slides show funny things - silly commonplace things with visual cross references, unusual similarities, beautiful things that go unnoticed, and current as well as historical quilting. Lecture is followed by show and tell of Jo’s quilts plus a few special antique quilts.
