David Sirota Manchester, New Hampshire After my friend Amy taught me the basics of quilt making, I learned just about everything I know from watching Simply Quilts. I have spent the past 13 years looking for the quickest and easiest way to complete a quilt. And as a result, I have developed the “No More Tears” method of foundation or paper piecing. I have taught this workshop throughout New England for several years and it has changed the way most of my students paper piece ... forever! I can’t imagine going back to the old way.
“No More Tears” Paper Piecing - Storm at Sea, Full Day Friday, 8/16/2013 - 8/16/2013, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Paper piecing will never be the same! Be on your way to creating a beautiful and versatile 30” x 30” Storm at Sea wall hanging using a revolutionary paper piecing technique. “No More Tears” takes much less time than traditional paper piecing and it enables you to use your paper pattern over and over again. Once you know the technique, you can use it on any paper piecing project. In this class you will learn the basics of paper piecing, the “No More Tears” method, Storm at Sea basics and tips and tricks for precise construction. Beginner/Intermediate levels.
Materials List: 2 yds each of 2 high contrasting fabrics cut to specifications. Opposites on the color wheel work great. There will be enough left for backing and binding. Sewing machine and matching thread. Fabric scissors, pins, rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat (a small one is fine). Add-a-Quarter ruler (available for purchase in class). Pre-class cutting instructions (will also be mailed to workshop registrants): All fabric is cut cross grain or folded selvage to selvage. Measurements allow for 40” of usable fabric. Bring cut pieces to class in 3 baggies - 1 for large center squares, 1 for sashing rectangles and 1 for cornerstone squares. Large center squares (9): From the dark fabric cut one 3-1/2” strip; from this strip cut nine 3-1/2” squares. Cut two 4-1/2” strips; from these strips cut eighteen 4-1/2” squares; cut these 18 squares diagonally in half to form 36 half square triangles. From the light fabric cut two 3-1/2” strips; from these strips cut eighteen 3-1/2” squares; cut these 18 squares diagonally in half to form 36 half square triangles. Sashing rectangles (24): From the dark fabric cut five 4” strips; cut these strips into twenty-four 4” x 7” rectangles. From the light fabric cut six 3” strips; cut these strips into forty-eight 3” x 5” rectangles; cut these 48 rectangles diagonally in half to form 96 “uneven” triangles. Note: since these triangles are “uneven” they have a definite direction in the block. It is important that you make sure that you pair your rectangles either wrong or right sides together before cutting then in half diagonally. An easy way to accomplish this is by making sure your strips are folded in half before cutting the rectangles. Cornerstone squares (16): From the dark fabric cut one 2” strip; cut this strip into sixteen 2” squares. Cut two 3” strips; cut these strips into thirty-two 3” squares; cut the 32 squares diagonally in half to form sixty-four half square triangles. (If you don’t have enough fabric, use the remaining 4” strip from the side rectangle to make up the difference.) From the light fabric cut two 2” strips; cut these strips into thirty-two 2” squares; cut the 32 squares diagonally in half to form 64 half square triangles. Sewing machine required. NH 016 60.00

“No More Tears” Paper Piecing - Scrappy Chevron Star, Full Day Saturday, 8/17/2013 - 8/17/2013, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Paper piecing will never be the same!!! Be on your way to creating this simple yet striking Scrappy Chevron Star wall hanging using lots of scraps. It was made using a revolutionary paper piecing technique. The Sirota “No More Tears” method takes about half the time of traditional paper piecing and enables you to use your pattern over and over again. No, you don’t tear the paper away at the end, and no, you don’t leave it on either. It can be used with any paper piecing project. In this class you will learn the “No More Tears” method, pattern preparation, block and quilt top construction, and how to have perfect (or close to it) star points. Intermediate/Advanced levels.
Materials List: 4 paper sandwich-size bags containing your cut fabric pieces. Sewing machine and neutral thread. Fabric scissors, pins, rotary cutter and small mat. Add-a-Quarter Ruler (optional) - 18” ruler will be available for purchase in class. This is the perfect project for using the small scraps of fabric that quilters have. The reason this pattern works so well is because the star points are made of alternating lights and darks in various patterns. The background, however, is very controlled. So, here’s what you need: Go to your fabric scraps (mine are just thrown in a large plastic bag ...gasp!) and randomly grab handfuls of fabric. Separate them into lights and darks, but make sure you’re choosing “colors” and not neutrals. The more fabrics you choose, the more interesting the wall hanging will be. Mediums can be used as either light or dark, and don’t forget that you paid for both sides of the fabric. Sometimes the back is perfect! DO NOT try to control the choices!!! (This is the perfect time to use some of those “what was I thinking when I bought this?” fabrics!) And, do not become too attached to any of your fabrics. We are going to be sharing fabrics with the rest of the class ... and yes, it’s mandatory. For the background, which is very controlled, you’ll want only two different neutral fabrics, one lighter than the other ... I chose beiges and browns. This creates a secondary pinwheel pattern and also helps your stars pop off the background. Pre-class cutting instructions (will also be mailed to workshop registrants): Star Point fabrics: “L” (Light) Fabric - (108) 2” x 5-1/2” rectangles. Put them in a paper bag. “D” (Dark) Fabric - (108) 2” x 5-1/2” rectangles. Put them in a paper bag. Background fabrics: You will need 24” of 2 different neutrals. Keep them subdued. And, decide which you want to assign as “dark” and “light.” Cut the fabric into four 4-1/2” strips. From those strips cut: “BL” (Background Light) Fabric - Cut (36) 4-1/2” squares in half diagonally to create 72 half-square triangles. Put them in a paper bag. “BD” (Background Dark) Fabric - Cut (36) 4-1/2” squares in half diagonally to create 72 half-square triangles. Put them in a paper bag. Sewing machine required. NH 017 60.00
