Susan E Pelland Upton, Massachusetts Sue Pelland has been quilting and teaching since the age of 13. Sue worked for her family owned quilt shop while earning a degree in Textile Chemistry. Her love of traditional appliqué quilts, combined with her limited quilting time as a busy mom, inspired Sue to invent tools designed to make appliqué faster and more successful for quilters of all skill levels. Sue is the designer of “Leaves Galore™” rotary cutting templates for appliqué as well as numerous patterns.
Flowers Galore Table Runner, Half Day Thursday, 8/15/2013 - 8/15/2013, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM In this Leaves Galore class, you will learn to use your Norme Leaves Galore template to cut fusible sunflower petals, lemon-shaped leaves and the piped curve on each edge of the table runner. This is a great way to try something new if you have not used the Leaves Galore templates yet. If you already have a set, let’s get them out and learn how to use them! There’s a little homework required before class so we can make the most of our time together. If you don’t have time to get the homework done, a kit of all fabric yardage needed for the table runner, including pre-fused appliqué fabrics, batting, backing, and piping, will be provided for an additional fee. All you need to do is bring the sewing supplies listed on the materials list and your sewing machine. (Optional fabric kit, $44 payable to the instructor; kit does not include template, thread and other supplies noted on the materials list.) All levels.
Materials List: I love to work with Batiks, they are wonderful because they fray less than printed fabrics. Batiks are not required for this technique, but they are nice! Background Fabric: Goes behind your flower and should contrast well with flower color (white in photo). Flower Fabrics: A variety of yellows for your Sunflower petals. Main Fabric: I love to look for Sunflower fabrics when I shop! Make sure the print relates to your flower in subject and color. Backing fabric: Can be the same as your main fabric. Yardage for ONE Table runner: Leaves: Green scraps or a 12” x 12” square. Flowers: 1/8 yd of two fabrics or more fabrics, or scraps equal to 1/4 yd (I will have a jelly roll available in class*). Background: (goes behind flower) 1/2 yd. Main fabric: 1/2 yd. Piping and flange: prepared piping (2 yds). Binding, Two strips, width of fabric x 2-1/4”( I used main fabric). Mistyfuse ™ or fusible web of your choice: 2 yds*; I will have Mistyfuse at the workshop. Backing fabric, 3/4 yd. Batting: 15” x 50”. Supplies: 18” Leaves Galore Norme template (available for purchase in class). Iron, pressing pad, extension cord or strip box. Appliqué pressing sheet (at least one)*. Thread to match appliqué and background. Marking pencil that shows up on your main fabric* or Quilter’s Chalk Line ™ *. I will have chalk lines for you to use. 28mm rotary cutter with a brand new blade *. Norme Leaves Galore template*. Straight acrylic template. Sewing machine in good working order. A new needle in your machine! Piping foot or zipper foot. Must get very close to your piping. Items marked * are available for purchase in class. Homework: If you can get your hands on my Leaves Galore Templates (borrow one from a friend?), practice cutting curves before you come to class. Use a 28mm rotary cutter and go slowly!! It may take a little while, but with a little practice you will be cutting curves like a pro. Please complete this step before class. If everyone gets their homework done before class, we will get lots more done on the table runner! Prep: Fuse back of flower and leaf fabrics only. Let cool. Remove paper backing from fusible. Sewing machine required. NH 015 35.00
