The spectacular global event, World Quilt New England, continues to be the host of the premiere of the highly renowned World Quilt Competition in Manchester, New Hampshire. Quilter Tanya McRae, who’s from Wonthaggi Australia, is no stranger to the World Quilt Competition. For the last 20 years, she has diligently submitted her entry from Australia. McRae’s first quilt submission was back in 1998 when the show was held at Pasadena, California. During that time World Quilt New England was a traveling show and titled World Quilt & Textile. Flash forward twenty years, and Tanya continues to produce beautiful masterpieces, entering her quilt in this year’s 22nd annual competition.

With the World Quilt Competition now in its 22nd year this August, McRae reminisces on the past twenty years and her experiences with Mancuso Show Management’s quilt festival.  Tanya even kept her flyer from the first World Quilt Competition she entered. Her use of vibrant colors and technical patterns in her traditional style quilts makes her work unique and recognizable after all these years! Looking back eight years ago, we were able to find her 2010 entry Candles of Life as well as her traditional quilt Day’s End from last year.

The competition, which includes entries from across the globe, is the largest international quilt festival to date with 15 countries participating in the competition. These countries over the years have included Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and of course Australia.

McRae’s quilt will appear at the Manchester venue, and be judged with the other entrants and has the opportunity to be selected to travel across the country to three other Mancuso Show Management quilt festivals. These shows include The Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza in September, Pacific International Quilt Festival in October, and World Quilt Florida in January.

These merchants will rock the show floor with the latest gadgets and gizmos, and fabric (lots of fabric!) to help festival attendees create their own stunning works of art.

Festival attendees may opt to learn new quilting techniques or brush up on old ones from the Quiltfest’s internationally renowned faculty. Joe Cunningham, Libs Elliott and Gloria Loughman are headlining the show. A Modernism Presentation & Tour, presented by Kurt Cyr (who you may recognize him from his appearances on HGTV) will also be available on Friday morning.

Quiltfest Oasis is Thursday thru Saturday, October 6-8, from 10am to 6pm each day. Attendees who roll into the quilt show this October will certainly not be disappointed.

Goddess of the Last Minute

The Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza
Welcomes the Goddess of the Last Minute
Robbi Joy Eklow
Unique Quilter & Informative Instructor

The Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks (Valley Forge area), PA September 15-18, 2016 features an impressive instructor line-up offering a variety of workshops, lectures, a judging seminar and fashion shows. This year’s Extravaganza features well-known instructors including Robbi Joy Eklow.

robbiDubbed “The Goddess of the Last Minute,” Robbi Joy Eklow started quilting during the 1976 quilt revival. She, however, did not actually finish a quilt until her son was born in 1985; a quilt which she still has today. Soon after the birth of her son, Robbi joined a quilt guild and began collecting fabric, taking workshops and attending quilting events. She quickly found a love for the world of quilts.

Robbi’s teaching career began at a local quilt shop when she walked into the store with a suitcase full of quilts and asked to teach. Today, Robbi lectures and teaches internationally. “I always felt that teaching would be fun if I could teach my own designs and that’s what I’ve done since,” says Robbi. She enjoys seeing what her students do with her designs and loves when they share their own knowledge with the class.

Robbi’s specialties include fused appliqué, which she designs on her computer. Her quilts are often seen in competitions and special exhibitions at major quilt shows across the United States. She has designed quilts, won awards and written articles for many quilting publications. Her first book is Free Expression: The Art and Confessions of a Contemporary Quilter.

What does Robbi love most about the craft of quilting? “I love being a member of the sister/brotherhood of quilters. I enjoy working with fiber and use it as a way to introduce myself to people. I make art quilts from cotton fabrics that I dye myself, use bonded appliqué and free motion quilt extensively on the surface. I enjoy lecturing and teaching in order to share the techniques I’m using and to encourage others to find their voice through fiber.”

Robbi will present three full day workshops and a lecture at PNQE. For details, please click here.
