Special Exhibits at Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza
Special exhibits are highly anticipated each year by attendees of the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza held this year from September 14-17, at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks (Valley Forge area), Pennsylvania. As with past shows, viewers will not be disappointed with the exhibits on display!
Included are exhibits by regional Modern Quilt Guilds from Lancaster, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Central Jersey. The four guilds are all members of The National Modern Quilt Guild. According to The Guild, “Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways. ‘Modern traditionalism’ or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.”
While each group will present its own exhibit, all are tied together by the common thread of Modern Quilting. The exhibit from the Lancaster Modern Quilt Guild will highlight its members’ unique interpretations of the many different styles of quilting they experienced and learned through the Guild’s speakers, workshops, and sew days. The Philadelphia Modern Quilt Guild’s exhibit will include examples of works chosen specifically to illustrate the range of activities the guild has orchestrated for its members over the last year. The Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild will present a Member’s Exhibit that is a representative collection of quilts crafted by their members, both individually and collectively. Members of the Central Jersey Modern Quilt Guild will exhibit challenge quilts based on the Pantone color of the year (#8217, Greenery). (Pictured left, a challenge quilt from the Central Jersey Guild.)
In addition, PNQE instructor Sarah Bond will also present an exhibit titled Modern Quilts from My Grandmothers. The Modern Quilt movement has quilters creating new and exciting quilts all over the world. Sarah comes from a long line of quilters, something she didn’t know when she made her first quilt. This exhibit will present the work of some of those quilters along with some of Sarah’s modern and contemporary works. See for yourself how the lives and quilts of four 19th and 20th century women influenced the 20th and 21st century work of one quilter.
Show-goers to the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza will not want to miss the amazing quilts showcased in these special exhibits.
The Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza is proudly supported by Major Annual Sponsor Brother/Byrne Sewing Connection, Major Sponsors Bernina/ Hayes Sewing Machine Company, Baby Lock/Steve’s Sewing, Vacuum & Quilting, Janome/Elna/Pocono Sew & Vac, and Silver Sponsors Handi Quilter and Innova.

One Woman Show: Barbara Barrick McKie
Barbara Barrick McKie has been fascinated with sewing, nature, and photography since high school. Her first original art quilt was created in 1971. In 1994, she created her first digital quilt and have been doing so ever since, printing her own fabric. Many of Barbara’s quilts are inspired by her trips around the world, and the animals and plants on her property. She photographs animals and nature, uses free-motion applique and quilting, and often uses trapunto & thread painting. (Pictured: Crested Barbet – yes, this really is a quilt!)
Wicked Good Art Quilts – SAQA Vermont-New Hampshire-Maine
New Englanders describe things as wicked, whether they are very good or very bewitching. New England SAQA artists were invited to create an art quilt displaying their finest – or rather – their wicked good art quilts. The exhibit showcases the diversity of style and techniques used by New England SAQA artists. (Pictured: Birds Relaxing Badly Again by Stephanye Schuyler)

Memorial Day 2017
Fallen Heroes by Valerie Beuth
Valerie entered Fallen Heroes in the competition at the Pacific International Quilt Festival. At that time she wrote about this quilt, “The source of my quilting energy comes from a compelling desire to translate works of art from other mediums into fabric. My visual inspiration for Fallen Heroes was provided by a drawing by political cartoonist David Granlund. Our flag is reaching out in gratitude to those who sacrificed everything to keep us free. The stripes coming apart remind us that war takes its toll on us all.”
