The Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks (Valley Forge area), PA September 15-18, 2016 features an impressive instructor line-up offering a variety of workshops, lectures, a judging seminar and fashion shows. This year’s Extravaganza features well-known instructors including Robbi Joy Eklow.
Dubbed “The Goddess of the Last Minute,” Robbi Joy Eklow started quilting during the 1976 quilt revival. She, however, did not actually finish a quilt until her son was born in 1985; a quilt which she still has today. Soon after the birth of her son, Robbi joined a quilt guild and began collecting fabric, taking workshops and attending quilting events. She quickly found a love for the world of quilts.
Robbi’s teaching career began at a local quilt shop when she walked into the store with a suitcase full of quilts and asked to teach. Today, Robbi lectures and teaches internationally. “I always felt that teaching would be fun if I could teach my own designs and that’s what I’ve done since,” says Robbi. She enjoys seeing what her students do with her designs and loves when they share their own knowledge with the class.
Robbi’s specialties include fused appliqué, which she designs on her computer. Her quilts are often seen in competitions and special exhibitions at major quilt shows across the United States. She has designed quilts, won awards and written articles for many quilting publications. Her first book is Free Expression: The Art and Confessions of a Contemporary Quilter.
What does Robbi love most about the craft of quilting? “I love being a member of the sister/brotherhood of quilters. I enjoy working with fiber and use it as a way to introduce myself to people. I make art quilts from cotton fabrics that I dye myself, use bonded appliqué and free motion quilt extensively on the surface. I enjoy lecturing and teaching in order to share the techniques I’m using and to encourage others to find their voice through fiber.”

PNQE Celebrates 23rd Year
You are invited to celebrate the world of quilting and, new for 2016 FASHION, as the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza returns to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA, September 15-18, 2016. PNQE includes a unique and beautiful display of over 600 quilts and works of textile and wearable art from across the globe, an amazing Merchants Mall, offering everything quilters and needle crafters need to quench their creative thirsts, and three fashion shows that are included with your admission. The Extravaganza is the largest and most comprehensive quilt festival in a state that is known for its rich history of quilting.
The 2016 teaching staff at the Extravaganza is sure to enlighten – from beginner to advanced there will be something for everyone. World Quilt New England Hosts SAQA Meeting

World Quilt New England will host the summer regional meeting of
SAQA On Saturday afternoon, August 20 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The meeting will be held at the quilt festival in the Radisson Center of New Hampshire in Manchester.
Guests and members are invited to attend SAQA’s summer regional meeting of local quilt artists from Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Topics for the meeting include discussion on pertinent aspects of professional development to aide in the presentation of your art, a slide show preview of regional quilts donated to SAQA’s Fall Benefit Auction and Show ‘n Tell of members’ recent work. Additionally, this is a marvelous opportunity to meet and network with fellow fiber artists that you won’t want to miss. We look forward to seeing you at Mancuso Show Management’s World Quilt New England event in Manchester, NH.
In addition to Saturday’s regional meeting, the SAQA members are
presenting a special exhibit at World Quilt New England. For their exhibit, A Piece of Me, the ME/NH/VT Region of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) issued a challenge posing the questions “What is an art quilter?” and “What does it mean to be an art quilter?” Participants were asked to make an 8” x 10” little quilt in answer. Selecting the Best of Them All!
When walking through a quilt show everyone has different routines. Some may go straight to the Merchants Mall to shop for specific fabrics, sewing machines or thread. Others choose to simply browse the thousands of products being offered in search of something that catches their eye to inspire a new project or to help complete an old one! Regardless of where you start, we can all agree that just about everyone goes to a quilt show to see the hundreds of quilts on display, and specifically the judged and juried competition quilts!
At World Quilt New England, quilters from around the world submit their art to the World Quilt Competition. While being juried into such a prestigious competition is a great honor, we believe that all the competition entrants share the same goal when they enter the World Quilt Competition – winning the “Best of World” award! If you are a quilt enthusiast, you can clearly see that the Best of World award winners are magnificent. However, after all of the “ooh’s and aah’s,” you can’t help but think, “With the hundreds of quilts entered into the World Quilt Competition how did this one get picked as THE BEST OF THEM ALL?” We’ve all been there before which is why we are offering a special two-day quilt judging class to answer your questions, teach you about design and workmanship evaluation, and educate you to look at quilts differently than ever before!
