Frieda Anderson’s Naturally Inspired Workshops

 World Quilt Show Florida
January 18-20, 2018
Orange County Convention Center – Orlando, Florida

The World Quilt Show Florida at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, January 18-20, 2018 features well-known instructors including the very talented and informative Frieda Anderson.

FriedaAnderson_2Frieda made her first quilt when she was in high school. She has always made things, and loves the process of creating. In college she majored in Art History and minored in ceramics, but returned to fiber because it was more satisfying. She can’t remember when she didn’t sew

She finds each step of quilt making, from the beginning to the end, a real challenge. Frieda says, “It is hard to say what part I like best. I love the pure creativity involved in conceiving and designing a new quilt. I love to piece and I love to fuse. I have found that by fusing smaller pieces, I can work out design issues. Then I like to make a bigger, bolder statement and piece the same quilt in a large format. Most of my work is machine quilted and nature inspired.”

Frieda’s original quilts are inspired by the everyday scenery that surrounds her and the colors of the mid-west landscape she lives in. She works with her own hand dyed cotton and silk fabrics. The dyeing process is always an adventure. The ways the dyed fabric look influence the rhythm of her work and the way she uses color in her pieces and often affects how she quilts her quilts. Trees and leaves are a big part of what influences her designs. Frieda has been making quilts for over 40 years.

Do You Know Uncle Dave?

World Quilt Show Florida
January 18-20, 2018
Orange County Convention Center – Orlando, Florida

Do You Know Uncle Dave? If not, get to know him while learning something new this January at the World Quilt Show Florida. Held at Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center, January 18-20, 2018, this is your opportunity to learn David Sirota’s No More Tears Method© of paper piecing. Do you have a love/hate relationship with paper piecing?  Do you love the accuracy you achieve, but hate the process of getting there?  Well, these workshops will change that to a LOVE relationship.

DavidSirota_3After David’s friend Amy taught him the basics of quilt making, he learned just about everything he knows from watching Simply Quilts. He’s spent the past 14 years looking for the quickest and easiest way to complete a quilt, short of just buying one! And as a result, he has developed the No More Tears© method of paper piecing. David has taught this workshop for several years now and it has changed the way his students paper piece … forever! He can’t imagine going back to the old way.

“Best class I’ve ever taken!”
“Wonderful class. I never thought I’d love paper piecing!”
“Thanks for making paper piecing so much fun!”
“Are you coming back next year?”

PLUS – Join David for a fun-filled, eye-opening look at quilters and the little quirks we all share.  We’ll see what our friends and family see when they look at us.  Maybe it will help explain why they look at us the way they do! Join Uncle Dave for What Makes a Quilter Tick? – A Humorous Look in the Mirror  at 4:30 on Thursday, January 18.

maskaradeMasks have been used for their expressive power since antiquity and come in many forms: Ritual masks, on action heroes and heroines,  masks in fashion,  pageants and carnivals that have played out for centuries. Even in the animal world, Mother Nature has given many animals  mask-like faces. Quilts pictured were created by Beverly Fine, Jane Gavlick and Candice Phelan.

World Quilt Florida Welcomes Marjan Kluepfel

Artist, Instructor & Quilt Enthusiast

For those interested in studying a wide variety of quilting techniques and styles, World Quilt Florida features a range of workshops and lectures presented by a world-renowned faculty. marjankluepfel_fb1Included is Marjan Kluepfel who is eager to spread her knowledge and passion for quilt making to students planning to participate in her full day workshops. Marjan’s love for quilting is contagious. You won’t want to miss her this year at World Quilt Florida held January 19-21, 2017 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.

Marjan grew up in the Netherlands, and after living in Florida, Hawaii, South Carolina and Australia, now makes her home in Northern California. Marjan’s main artistic influence is the natural wonders she encountered in all those places, both on land and under water.

Marjan pays close attention to color and texture, “I like to work with color and movement in my pieces. The bright colors I use express my positive outlook on life.” She uses many different surface design techniques such as fabric dyeing, painting, printing, pleating and machine quilting and embroidery.

The texture, color and prints of fabrics fascinate her and often give her inspiration for new designs. She seldom draws out a quilt plan, but lets the fabrics and textures determine the next step. While working towards an idea, she tries to avoid any definite image of the completed piece, because the complex nature of fabric often reveals surprises that dictate unexpected changes of direction.

Marjan writes, “I am an artist who uses fabric and thread as my medium instead of paper and paint … and a sewing machine instead of a brush. I like to work with color and movement in my pieces. The bright colors I use express my positive outlook on life.”

Her work has been juried into many shows and she teaches internationally. Above all, Marjan states, “My desire has always been to create unique pieces and have lots of fun during the process.

kluepfel_fl002bMarjan will present three full-day workshops at World Quilt Florida. Her workshop on Thursday, January 19 is titled Shimmering Dragonflies & Sparkling Flowers. On Friday, January 20, she will present Seascapes, and on Saturday, January 21, Hand Dyed Fabrics: They’re ir-RESIST-able. For details on these workshops please visit quiltfest.com.

Taking one of Marjan’s workshops will set you on a path of exploration of new ideas and techniques!

Renowned California Quilter Linda Schmidt Joins the Faculty of World Quilt Florida

Talent, creativity and expertise surround World Quilt Florida, which will take place in Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center, January 19-21, 2017. A spectacular faculty will offer a wide variety of workshops for the beginner to the more advanced quilter. rendevous-in-florenceIncluded in the stellar line-up of instructors is well-known quilt maker and teacher Linda Schmidt who will present several workshops and a lecture/trunk show. Linda’s easy-going teaching style has made her a sought-after instructor on the national circuit for more than 20 years.

Pictured above:  Rendezvous in Florence – A “quilted head shot” of Linda by Linda.

Linda’s quilting philosophy is that she firmly believes you can do whatever you set out to do, as long as you have the tools and techniques to get you there. She comes from a long line of quilting women and started her first quilt at the age of eight, and has made almost all of her own clothing since she was twelve. She has, of course, made hundreds of quilts and has won over 300 ribbons from local, national and international quilting exhibitions.

Linda stated, “The bottom line is that there is nothing I like better than to talk to people about quilting, unless it is making quilts and wearable art. I have an eclectic taste in quilts and quilters, an insatiably inquiring mind and a sincere desire to help others learn what they need to know in order to do what needs to be done. So, welcome to my world!”

schmidt_fl011aLinda will present three, full-day workshops at World Quilt Florida. On Thursday, January 19, join Linda for Fantasy Forest; you will create a miniature forest scene while learning design principles as you work with a wide variety of techniques and products. On Friday, Linda offers her classic Creating with Cool Stuff workshop where you will experiment with “cool stuff” that will enable you to create waterfalls, trees, clouds, streams and abstract art. The Perfect Wave is Linda’s half-day workshop on Saturday, January 21. Linda says, Come jump in – the water’s fine!” While creating your perfect wave you will try out all sorts of products and interesting techniques. Pictured: The Perfect Wave.

Short Attention Span Quilting is Linda’s 4:30 pm, Friday, January 20 lecture and trunk show. This event is a grand panorama of Linda’s art quilts starting with her first blue ribbon quilt and moving on through her adventures in quilting with a few wearable art garments thrown in … just for fun!
