World Quilt New England Shines with International Instructor

  The fifteenth annual World Quilt New England event, August 17-19, 2017, at Manchester’s Radisson Center of New Hampshire, offers a fantastic, panoramic view of the world’s take on quilting and the textile arts. The Festival’s World Quilt Competition, along with its special exhibits, provides a colorful vista of fabric and thread. In addition, the world-renowned faculty presenting workshops at the show can open the doors to a new world of quilting with their innovative designs and techniques.

ChrisPorter-AwardIncluded on the faculty for 2017 is Christine Porter. Taught to sew as a child by her grandmother and mother, it was not until 1989 that – on a sudden impulse – she visited the American Museum in Bath and discovered a wonderful collection of vintage American quilts. The quilts moved her so much that she gave up her career as a college lecturer in health studies to become a full-time quilter. Today, Christine is one of the foremost British quilters. Working in her Bristol studio, Chris creates wonderfully refreshing quilts that combine traditional shapes and clear colors with simple construction. The results are always fun, happy quilts. Chris’ quilts encourage the playful use of fabric.

The former editor of Britain’s Patchwork & Quilting magazine, Christine has authored six beautiful books including her most recent, Sensational Circle Quilts. On a lighter note, Chris combined her talents with Darra Williamson to create a new, light-hearted book, which is A Year in the Life of Sunbonnet Sue. Another book is currently in the making. She has also made four DVDs.

Because Christine is an excellent teacher, she is a very popular guest instructor, lecturer and quilt judge throughout Great Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Norway, Dubai, Kuwait, New Zealand, Spain, Turkey and France, and on cruises for Quilt Seminars at Sea. FlyingAroundinCirclesChristine will present two full day workshops at the New England event. On Thursday, August 17, students can enjoy Flying Around in Circles while making an exciting quilting using circles and squares to produce a stunning design. Friday will be Strippy Fans with a Twist! – the twist is the special wedge ruler that takes math out of the equation. The half-day Rainbow Color Wheel Fan workshop on Saturday is Christine’s class for those new to making a fan quilt; learn the technique while making a pretty wall hanging or larger quilt. Christine will wrap up her stay in Manchester by hosting a luncheon/lecture on Saturday, August 19. She will transport you to Venice, Rome, Spain and beyond with her presenting Floor Tiles Make Fabulous Quilts – Be Inspired! Lunch is included with this presentation.

OCTOBER 12 – 15, 2017

 The Pacific International Quilt Festival returns to Santa Clara, CA October 12-15, 2017 with a spectacular collection of over 800 quilts and works of wearable and textile art. This highly anticipated quilt show, the largest on the west coast, is held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in the greater San Francisco Bay area.

As the Pacific International Quilt Festival celebrates 26 years, the 1043a2017 Quilt Competition theme, Everyday, asks textile artists how Everday is a quilting day and what they see in their Everydays ahead. In addition, PIQF will also present the Mid-Century Mod Modern Quilt Competition. Entrants to this competition, who will compete for over $12,000 in awards and prizes, are asked to draw inspiration from the look and feel of mid-20th century design.

The fashionable entries in the Wearable Art Competition will also be on display. The best entries from among these works will be awarded over $4,700 in awards and prizes.

In addition to the competition entries there will be Special Exhibits of quilts and textile art from around the world. Among them are the international entries and selected U.S. winning entries from the 2017 World Quilt Competition XXI: On Tour.

Not only does this incredible event feature astounding works of art, it also offers a wide array of workshops and lectures presented by a stellar line-up of national and international instructors teaching all levels of quilt, wearable and textile arts. New for PIQF in 2017 is the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges (NACQJ) Two Day Introduction to Judging Seminar. Presented by Pat Harrison (Rhode Island), the seminar is limited to just 12 participants.

In addition, PIQF hosts a 200-booth Merchants Mall with the best in fabrics (no quilter can have too much fabric!), notions, machines, wearable art and everything for the quilter, textile artist and home sewer.

Also offered at PIQF is the Quilters Adventure Tour. The Adventurers will visit the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles and the charming Monterey Bay town of Pacific Grove for shopping and lunch, plus the studios of renowned textile artists Rachel Clark and Nora Deans. Another perennial favorite among show-goers is the PIQF Fashion Show; For the Love of Color – 2017 will be presented Friday evening, October 13. This fun event is organized and moderated by Karen Boutte, Quilt Diva.

Special Exhibits at Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza

Special exhibits are highly anticipated each year by attendees of the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza held this year from September 14-17, at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks (Valley Forge area), Pennsylvania. As with past shows, viewers will not be disappointed with the exhibits on display!

Included are exhibits by regional Modern Quilt Guilds from Lancaster, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Central Jersey. The four guilds are all members of The National Modern Quilt Guild. According to The Guild, “Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways. ‘Modern traditionalism’ or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.”

While each group will present its own exhibit, all are tied together Central Jersey Modernby the common thread of Modern Quilting. The exhibit from the Lancaster Modern Quilt Guild will highlight its members’ unique interpretations of the many different styles of quilting they experienced and learned through the Guild’s speakers, workshops, and sew days. The Philadelphia Modern Quilt Guild’s exhibit will include examples of works chosen specifically to illustrate the range of activities the guild has orchestrated for its members over the last year. The Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild will present a Member’s Exhibit that is a representative collection of quilts crafted by their members, both individually and collectively. Members of the Central Jersey Modern Quilt Guild will exhibit challenge quilts based on the Pantone color of the year (#8217, Greenery). In addition, PNQE instructor Sarah Bond will also present an exhibit titled Modern Quilts from My Grandmothers. The Modern Quilt movement has quilters creating new and exciting quilts all over the world. Sarah comes from a long line of quilters, something she didn’t know when she made her first quilt. This exhibit will present the work of some of those quilters along with some of Sarah’s modern and contemporary works. See for yourself how the lives and quilts of four 19th and 20th century women influenced the 20th and 21st century work of one quilter.

Show-goers to the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza will not want to miss the amazing quilts showcased in these special exhibits.

Valerie entered Fallen Heroes in the competition at the Pacific International Quilt Festival. At that time she wrote about this quilt, “The source of my quilting energy comes from a compelling desire to translate works of art from other mediums into fabric. My visual inspiration for Fallen Heroes was provided by a drawing by political cartoonist David Granlund. Our flag is reaching out in gratitude to those who sacrificed everything to keep us free. The stripes coming apart remind us that war takes its toll on us all.”
