World Quilt New England
Presents a Quilting Dynamo from South Africa
Rosalie Dace – Quilter, Instructor & Talented Artist
From August 18-20, 2016 in Manchester, New Hampshire, World Quilt New England will offer a fantastic, panoramic view of the world’s take on quilting and textile art. The World Quilt Competition and special exhibitions provide a colorful vista of fabric and thread. In addition, the world-renowned faculty presenting workshops at the show can open the doors to a new world of quilting with their innovative designs and techniques.
Included among the instructors is Rosalie Dace who lives in South Africa. Rosalie is a talented quilter who enjoys teaching those who love the craft as much as she does. She loves fabric, particularly the texture, smell and human quality. She comments, “I love the way the color goes right through fabrics and the way it drapes. It is comforting and exciting at the same time and is constantly a platform for people’s ingenuity and creativity. While the traditions of the craft give us a measure of security and continuity with the past, the medium lends itself to innovation and incorporation of new technology. As a quilt maker, I am constantly trying to balance being a teacher and helping people develop their creativity, while producing fresh work myself.”
Rosalie started teaching in her home, but today is invited to teach at events all over the world. Her specialties are good basic design, numerous embellishment techniques, techniques in skinny line piecing and the use of sheers. Teaching allows Rosalie to interact with people who have the same interests as her, but who have unique and diverse backgrounds. “I see my job as being a catalyst to enable students to do far more than they ever believed possible; and I love to see their eyes light up when they say, ‘Look what I did,’” Rosalie said.
Major moments in Rosalie Dace’s quilting life range from making her first quilt and seeing her son’s face when she gave him a quilt for his 17th birthday to winning major awards and being published and exhibited nationally and internationally. How does she feel about her life these days? “I feel very fortunate to do the traveling I do as a quilter and sometimes feel I have to pinch myself to see if it’s all real.”
Rosalie teaches two, full day workshops at the World Quilt New England on Thursday, August 18, Going Round in Circles, and on Friday, August 19, African Motifs in Design. You also won’t want to miss her luncheon lecture on Saturday, August 20 at 12:30 pm, Old Traditions, New Directions offering a personal view of the of the obsessive pleasure and delight (along with a measure of agony) that many quilt makers experience.
