Outstanding Faculty to Present Over Twenty Workshops During Quilt Festival

With the return of World Quilt New England (WQNE) to the Center of New Hampshire, comes new artistry, quilts, and instructors. Celebrating its 16th year in Manchester, Mancuso Show Management’s remarkable quilt festival is scheduled for this summer, Thursday, August 16 through Saturday, August 18. The show offers incredible workshops taught by some of the most extraordinary teachers in the industry.

Mancuso Show Management prides itself on providing instructors who can communicate to students the most innovative ideas, techniques, and methods in the quilting world. The aim, to have a collective faculty of talented, fresh innovators, has resonated positively among registrants. This year is no different.

For the summer of 2018, World Quilt New England is presenting an outstanding group of twelve men and women who will present over twenty different workshops and lectures. Some instructors travel the globe to be here with us, some a few states, and others a few towns over. All, however, bring to the table their own unique style and approach to quilting. The only man on our instructor line up is the one and only David Sirota from the city of Manchester! In his Thursday workshop Card Trick, using the Sirota “No More Tears©” Paper Piecing Method, he has taken the mystery out of basic paper piecing. You’ll be crying tears of joy after learning the method that makes paper piecing done in half the time!

Another native of New Hampshire is Bobbie Bergquist who will be a judge for the competition in addition to instructing a half-day class on Thursday. The workshop, new for 2018, is titled How to Make a 2-Sided Quilt with Quilt As You Go. Learn Bobbie’s simple Quilt As You Go technique where you will learn how to create 2 sided blocks and join them together.

Fiber enthusiast Cyndi Catt is the last local from New Hampshire, who will be bringing the art of needle felting to the workshops! Anyone looking to learn the basics of needle felting and bring home a cute project of your choice (gnomes, sheep, trees, foxes, owls etc.) then this is the class for you!

Try something new and work on a longarm machine! One of our very talented longarm teachers for this year is Margaret Solomon Gunn. Her Thursday morning class, Dense & Danty Freehand Fills, introduces students to several creative background fills! Join Margaret in the afternoon for her Templates I workshop. This class is perfect for newer longarm users who are interested in learning template techniques and tips. The longarm workshop on Friday morning, Fearless Feathers, is for quilters who want to incorporate feathers into their quilting! By the end of her three half-day classes on Thursday and Friday, you will be a pro at using a Longarm machine. For those more interested in a design workshop, Margaret will also be offering her Creating a Masterpiece half-day workshop on Friday afternoon. During this class, she will be discussing the characteristics of quilts and what makes them true masterpieces! Students will then utilize Margaret’s suggestions and guidelines to create a quilting design for a top.

Or learn the basics of the longarm machines in Judy Engime’s Friday afternoon half day workshop Let’s Get Started – Free Motion Focus or experiment with alternative textiles on the machines in her Saturday morning half day class Let’s Try Something Different! Let’s all be sure to take these Longarm workshops!

A judge, lecturer, and instructor, Esterita Austin is sure to be a presence at this summer’s festival. An internationally award-winning quilt maker and designer, she is well known for her portraiture and stone series as well as her mono printing techniques. Esterita will have three full-day workshops each day suited for all skill levels. Her Luminous Painted Illusions on Thursday and Iridescent Painted Irises on Saturday will both teach students an original technique that uses fusible web to transfer painted imagery to Organza using textile paints. Esterita’s Friday class Animal Portraits will be creating a fabric portrait with an emphasis on color and value. Her lecture, Inspirational Journeys, on Thursday at 4:30 pm will discuss the idea that we can find inspiration for art in the most unlikely places.

Barbara Dann, an instructor who enjoys teaching techniques that make piecing easier, faster, and more accurate, will be presenting three full-day workshops. Her Thursday class Galaxy will have students making a quilt with the alternating block design. Then on Friday, she will be teaching how to make a quilt that uses corner beam blocks that give your masterpiece an alternating diamond illusion in Diamonds in the Sky. Her final class on Saturday, titled Love Links, involves learning how to make flying geese using the Wing Clipper tool. Barbara is also a panelist on Friday’s World Quilt Panel & Forum Ice Cream Social at 4:30 pm.

Lecturer, panelist, judge, and instructor Laura Wasilowski will present three classes. In Thursday’s full-day class, Another Nut House, students will learn fusing techniques, how to add hand embroidery, and finally how to bind an art quilt. Then, in the full day Friday class, Improvisational Hand Embroidery on Wool, learn to create a hand embroidered vignette on wool. Her Saturday half-day workshop, titled Tiny Homes, explores the techniques of fusing while creating a little house quilt. If you don’t have time to take Laura’s class, see her at Friday’s 4:30 pm World Quilt Panel & Forum Ice Cream Social. She will be discussing the quilting world and the direction of the industry with two other panelists. Then catch her luncheon lecture, about quilt making in a series, on Saturday at 12:30 pm.

The official quilt appraiser for the show and an instructor on our faculty this year is Joyce Fischer from New York state. Her Friday half day workshop titled Invisible Machine Applique will teach an invisible machine applique technique where students will learn to prepare applique shapes and background fabric, how to apply prepared shapes, and finally how the technique will give a look of hand applique when applied. Come learn these new skills to make a masterpiece all your own!

Don’t be intimidated by Michele Galloway’s Scared Silly! workshop. The class which is for all skill levels will have you combining color and embroidery with the Crayola Color Tinting technique. Done with hand embroidery, students will leave this Saturday half-day workshop with a fall themed wall quilt.

Looking to learn the tricks that make machine quilting easier? Erin Underwood has all the answers for you in her Saturday full day workshop Free Motion Machine Quilting. Students will practice border patterns, sashing ideas, and fillers for all that empty white space. You won’t want to miss out on this class!

The international instructor on this year’s faculty is Eti David, from Israel. With 40 years of quilting experience, Eti will be teaching three full-day workshops. She will also be on the panel for the World Quilt Panel & Forum Ice Cream Social on Friday at 4:30 pm. Her Thursday class, One Line Variation, will examine the principles of composition with an emphasis on lines. Mikado, her Friday class will work with lines, rhythm, and flow while creating a quilt that represents the Japanese tradition of sleeping on the floor. Her last workshop on Saturday, Waves, teaches students how to create a flow of waves by combining curvy lines while using various colors and shapes.
